Oprah’s Next Chapter: Neil Patrick Harris

Oprah Winfrey visits Emmy-winning actor Neil Patrick Harris, his fiancé David Burtka and their 18-month old twins, Harper and Gideon, at their home in the quiet suburbs of Los Angeles. In a television exclusive, this modern American family opens their home and private family life to Winfrey and her cameras for the first time. Then, Winfrey sits down with the couple for eight years, as they speak candidly about what it was like for them growing up gay, Harris’s decision to come out in Hollywood and its impact on his career, and raising children in a household with two fathers. They open up about their private struggles in their relationship as Burtka, both a trained chef and actor, says it isn’t easy being in a relationship where one person is more famous and successful than the other. Harris speaks openly about the stress of living in Hollywood and the pressure of knowing the entire world is watching their family to see if they can go the distance. Winfrey gets a rare and intimate look inside the home life of this very private and loving family.

Neil will once again host the Tony Awards this year, which will take place on June 10th from the Beacon Theater in Manhattan and be broadcast on CBS.

The fantastic Lin-Manuel Miranda has posted a video of him and Tommy Kail sitting backstage at the Beacon Theatre Sunday night, writing the words to Neil’s closing “rap-up”, including footage of Neil running through the lyrics.

Neil will be hosting the 65th Annual Tony Awards this coming Sunday, June 12th, and some details have started to emerge about the performances that can be expected on the night. Neil will be taking part in a performance from April’s limited run revival of Company ahead of its cinema release on June 15, and according to BroadwayWorld.com (the linked article contains detailed information about who will be performing what on the night, so if you prefer surprises, don’t click!) “a highly theatrical number performed by Neil Patrick Harris and created by David Javerbaum will open the telecast”.

Neil will be appearing on The View and The Late Show with David Letterman this Thursday to promote the show.

Finally, in non-Tonys news, Neil has been nominated in the first annual Critics’ Choice Awards in the Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series category, for his role as Barney Stinson in How I Met Your Mother. The awards will air on ReelzChannel on June 22nd, and Variety has the full list of nominees.

If you weren’t lucky enough to be at Avery Fisher Hall to see Company last month, you can now see a first look clip of the cinematic release. The New York Philharmonic YouTube has posted a video of the cast performing Side By Side. Tickets are now on sale for your chance to catch this in movie theaters, starting June 15th (Neil’s birthday).

The New York Philharmonic, EMK Productions and Screenvision are proud to present Stephen Sondheim’s “Company” in movie theatres across the nation. The production was shot in early April as part of the Philharmonic’s spring gala. Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother) lead an all-star cast which included Patti LuPone, Stephen Colbert (The Colbert Report), Jon Cryer (Two and a Half Men), Christina Hendricks (Mad Men), Craig Bierko and Martha Plimpton. Company’s plot revolves around Bobby (a single man unable to commit fully to a steady relationship, let alone marriage), the five married couples who are his best friends, and his three girlfriends. It’s a concept musical composed of short vignettes linked by a celebration for Bobby’s 35th birthday.

And if you hadn’t already heard, further to the rumour last week that Neil would be hosting this year’s Tony Awards, it’s true, and Neil confirmed it in a tweet last week. The ceremony takes place at the Beacon Theater in New York on June 12, and will be broadcast live on CBS (8/7c, 8pm time delay on the West Coast).

Deadline reports that Neil will once again host the award ceremony, which takes place on Sunday, June 12th.

He previously hosted the awards in 2009, for which he won an Emmy.

At tonight’s Creative Arts Emmys, two of Neil’s categories are expected to be announced. The winner of the Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series, as well as the category he was belatedly nominated in for his presenting of 2009′s Tony Awards will be revealed at tonight’s ceremony. An edited version of the show will air this Friday on E!.
