Neil to direct “The Expert At The Card Table”

By Hilary | Published Fri Jun-24-11 -

Neil will direct UK magician Guy Hollingworth in “The Expert at the Card Table”, which runs at The Broad Stage, Santa Monica from July 13th to August 7th.

Neil Patrick Harris’ latest directorial project is all fun and games until magic turns to mystery.

Written and performed by sleight-of-hand master Guy Hollingworth, and the artistic direction of David Babani of the Menier Chocolate Factory, this acclaimed adaptation of a notorious, anonymously penned 1902 book gob-smacked audiences with its tale of two boys whose childhood love of card tricks turns in adulthood into a deadly game of trickery and deceit.

Hope you’ve gotten some sleep now, Neil!

Neil to host Academy of Magical Arts Awards

By Rach | Published Thu Mar-18-10 -

After successfully hosting last year’s Academy of Magical Arts Awards, Neil will again be taking on hosting duties for the 42nd Annual AMAs, taking place on April 11th at the Avalon Theatre, Hollywood.

The Academy of Magical Arts, Inc. & The Magic Castle present the The 42nd Annual Awards of The Academy of Magical Arts, Inc.Β A highly anticipated entertainment tradition, The Academy of Magical Arts, Inc. 42nd Annual Awards Show celebrates the lavish world of mystery and illusion by gathering the top magicians from all over the world for one star-studded spectacular night. This year’s ceremonies will be hosted by Broadway, television and motion picture star Neil Patrick Harris. The night will include performances by Yo Kato, Ed Alonzo, John Calvert, Andrew Goldenhersh, Armando Lucero, Jeff Hobson, The Great Tomsoni & Co. and more! Producers: Neil Patrick Harris & Matt Patton. Writer: David Regal.

The pre-show cocktail reception starts at 5pm with the show itself starting at 7pm. Tickets are available for between $75-200, email broman@magiccastle.com for more details.

In other news, some further casting details have been released for the Smurfs movie. Glee star Jayma Mays has been cast as Neil’s pregnant wife in the live-action/CGI hybrid. This is being hailed by some as a “Glee reunion”, but don’t forget they’ve worked together before, when she played “Coat Check Girl” in season one of HIMYM.

Jayma Mays as Coat Check Girl, Josh Radnor as Ted Mosby and Neil Patrick Harris as Barney Stinson

The NY Post has a photo of Neil on the Glee set (spoilers only for his outfit), and the Beastly camp have released a couple of new photos from the movie, one of which contains Neil and can be seen at Entertainment Weekly.

MagicNewsWire interview

By Rach | Published Thu Oct-29-09 -

MagicNewsWire.com has posted a brand new audio interview with Neil, conducted on Monday. The interview, with MNW’s Dodd Vickers, last for half an hour. You can listen to it streaming on the site, or if you’d prefer there are various options for adding it to iTunes, downloading the MP3, etc.

As we approach Magic Week at the Magic Castle in Hollywood, California, Neil Patrick Harris joins me for a second interview on the Magic Newswire podcast to discuss the 100th Anniversary of the mansion and “It’s Magic 2009.” Neil also talks about Max Maven’s resignation as the Castle’s Entertainment Director, why magic is an important part of his life and what the future has in store from his magic and for the Magic Castle.

Magic, Hosting and a Broadway Rumour

By Rach | Published Tue Sep-22-09 -

Neil will host “It’s Magic”, part of a week long celebration of the Magic Castle‘s 100th anniversary. “It’s Magic!” will take place on Sunday,Β November 8th, at 7:00pm at The Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles, California. Tickets cost between $25 and $67.50, visit Ticketmaster to purchase.

Neil’s hosting gig at the Emmys saw the ratings rise almost 10%, similar to the ratings high achieved when he hosted the Tonys back in June. And the glowing reviews have continued to roll in over the last 48 hours; they now include NPR, Time Magazine, eonline, TV Guide, and Hugh Jackman.

Charity Folks are running an auction to win the chance to visit the set of HIMYM and meet Josh Radnor, to benefit Young Storytellers. The bidding currently stands at $1,500 and the auction runs for another 7 days. To find out more about Young Storytellers, visit youngstorytellers.com.

And finally, according to Roger Friedman of The Hollywood Reporter, Neil is set to join the cast of David Mamet’s “Race” on Broadway this winter. Rehersals begin on October 19th, previews run from November 17th and the play officially opens on December 6th, but there’s no official confirmation one way or the other yet, and we would suggest taking it with a pinch of salt at the moment as it would obviously seriously interrupt with Neil’s HIMYM commitments.

Neil talks AI to EW.

By Rach | Published Fri Aug-28-09 -

Neil talks with Entertainment Weekly about his guest judging stint on American Idol. He reveals as part of the interview that he, Josh and Jason have just completed a photoshoot for an upcoming issue of Playboy. It’s to coincide with the launch of the show, so it’s quite possibly the October issue, due out in late Sept.

In addition to his appearance on next Friday (Sept 4th)’s Letterman, Neil will also be checking in with Craig Ferguson on Septmeber 8th.

As mentioned on our Twitter, Neil is on the cover of this month’s issue of Genii magazine. You can order the issue on their website.

Finally, Neil is supporting the Get Schooled campaign. “Get Schooled is a national platform that connects, inspires and mobilizes people – from policymakers and corporate leaders to communities and kids – to find effective solutions to the problems facing our education system. It provides resources and information, community outreach and creative programming that engage a range of audiences around America’s education crisis.” You can check out his video message here. He is also once again supporting the What Book Got You Hooked? campaign. Now through September 30, readers everywhere are invited to share the first book that made reading fun for them and then help get more kids hooked by voting for the state to receive 50,000 new books for low-income youth.

Blogger Tara Settembre was lucky enough to speak on the phone with Neil earlier today, and just posted up the interview. It’s a great read, and thanks to Tara for pointing us in the right direction!

In the interview Neil mentions giving out candy in Times Square earlier today, and you can see more about that in his interview with F0x & Friends this morning.

Bravo’s β€œA-List Awards” (amended)

By Rach | Published Fri Mar-27-09 -

In a slight amendment to our last post, Bravo’s “A-List” awards will indeed air on Wednesday, April 15th at 10/9c, but the actual ceremony takes place on Sunday April 5th at the Orpheum Theater in Los Angeles. It’s worth noting that this is the day after “The Expert at the Card Table”‘s three night run in London reaches its end, so it probably means that Neil won’t be over in London for those shows.

The Expert at the Card Table – London

By Rach | Published Thu Mar-26-09 -

After a sell out run at last year’s Edinburgh Festival, Guy Hollingworth’s “The Expert at the Card Table” is coming to London for three dates in April. The show mark’s Neil’s directorial debut, and is a really enthralling show. Guy won Magician of the Year at the recent Academy of Magical Arts Awards in LA, which Neil hosted, and the show recently sold out a run at LA’s Magic Castle.

The show is running at the Menier Chocolate Factory on April 2nd, 3rd and 4th at 8pm. If you’re interested it’s advised you buy your ticket soon, because the tiny venue will sell out fast.

Neil may or may not be present for the shows; he attended the Edinburgh show for the first few nights of the run only, so don’t buy a ticket expecting to see him, but take it as a bonus if you do!

Words of Wisdom

“Watch your step when you get up kids, 'cause I'm about to drop some knowledge. Relationships are like a freeway. Freeways have exits, so do relationships. The first exit, my personal favorite, is six hours in. You meet, you talk, you have sex, you exit when she's in the shower. The next exits are four days, three weeks, seven months - That's when you guys are gonna break up, mark your calendars. Then a year and a half, eighteen years, and the last exit: death, which, if you've been with the same woman for your entire life, it's like "Are we there yet?"”
- Barney Stinson
