Link Roundup

By Rach | Published Sat Aug-14-10 -

Here’s a bit of a link roundup of videos and interviews – most are Rent related and were conducted before last weekend’s shows.

Before last weekend’s Rent production, Southern California Public Radio conducted a five minute interview with Neil about Rent, which you can listen to on their website, and the Orange County Register talked to him too.Vanessa Hudgens talked to MTV about working with Neil, and there’s a nice quote from Neil about Vanessa at the end of the article. After the event, Suite101.com posted a good writeup of the show. Sky.com’s Showbiz section also has a video from rehearsals.

Neil talked to eonline about the chances of him coming back to Glee, and provided EW.com with his “Must List” – you can check out three items from his must-see list here.

Dracula’s Daughters vs the Space Brains will be showing at the Oklahoma Horror Film Festival on Labor Day weekend, Sept 3rd-5th – check out their website for more details and a short interview with director Frank Ippolito.

Interviews old and new

By Rach | Published Sun Jul-4-10 -

First of all, TV Squad caught up with Neil while he was doing his Smurfs press a few weeks ago. They cover everything from Harold & Kumar to Glee and Doctor Horrible, so check it out here.

Is there going to be a third ‘Harold and Kumar’ movie?
They started filming already. It’s called ‘A Very Harold and Kumar Christmas.’ It’s in 3-D, and they’re filming in Detroit. I’m not dead in the third one.

How are you going to explain that?
You saw me get shot [in the last movie], and at the end of the credits I arose, so I was clearly not dead. All may or probably won’t be explained. There’s a new director on board, and he’s great. We’re doing a giant holiday TV special Christmas medley that I help [out on], so there may be singing and dancing in ‘Harold and Kumar.’ He’s very enthusiastic towards Busby Berkeley.

You have so many different projects going on now.
I’m just so amazed and lucky that things keep slotting in as they do. Things have been very fortunate the last couple of years, to an extreme, but if this movie ['Smurfs'] were happening a month later, I wouldn’t have been able to do it because it would have overlapped with ‘How I Met Your Mother,’ and if this movie had gone on another week I wouldn’t have been able to do ‘Harold and Kumar’ because I had to slot that in. It’s all been circumstantial and wonderful.

And Out.com caught up with Neil not long after last year’s Emmys, in this interview that we haven’t linked here before.

More “Glee” interviews

By Rach | Published Wed May-19-10 -

Now that the episode has aired, Tim Stack of EW’s PopWatch has posted an interview conducted with Neil during the filming of the episode, and it contains mild spoilers. They talk about how Neil got the gig on Glee, working with Joss, and his fears for the future of Dr Horrible.

There’s also a video interview on MTV.com, conducted on the red carpet at TIME magazine’s 100 most influential people gala a week or two back.

If you didn’t see the episode, you can catch it on Hulu if you’re in the US. In the UK, Dream On will air on E4 this coming Monday (May 24th) at 9pm, repeated throughout the week, and on Channel 4 next Friday (May 28th) at 8pm for those of you without digital. “Dream On” is the only one of Neil’s songs from the episode that has an official studio version, which you can buy on iTunes or here on Amazon (coming soon), and features on the Volume 3: Showstoppers soundtrack album, which is out now.

In non-Glee news, Stand Up To Cancer today announced that following their September 2008 telethon, there will be another this year, to be broadcast on September 10th. More details will be announced as the date approaches, and Neil may not be involved, but he is a strong supporter of their work so we’re keen to publicise their event here.

Neil Patrick Harris Dishes on “Beastly”

By Rach | Published Wed Apr-7-10 -

MTV.com have followed up their interviews with Vanessa Hudgens and Alex Pettyfer with an interview with Neil from the ShoWest event a few weeks ago. He talks about the plot, his role, and what he thinks of the finished movie.

“Alex’s character gets a hex put on him that turns him physically ugly, and he has [to learn] what true beauty is, because he’s kind of a douche,” Harris explained as only he could. “His dad holds him up in an apartment, and I’m the tutor that’s hired to teach him things, and I’m blind. Therefore, I can’t see his deformities.

“I have a kinship with him, because I also have a physical disability that I have to go beyond,” the star said of his first dramatic role in nearly half a decade. “So I teach him a thing or two.

“This is a very classy movie, actually,” he promised. “It looks great. I think the performances are strong. I think it’s better than your average teen film.

Neil Patrick Harris Talks ‘Glee’ and Healthy Gums!

By Rach | Published Mon Mar-22-10 -

Neil talks to Entertainment Tonight while recording a voiceover for a new educational short from Listerine.

As for “This is Your Mouth,” Neil says he decided to lend his voice to the eight-minute film for a number of reasons: “I have a niece and nephew, and so I like being able to do darker, kind of ‘Harold & Kumar,’ Barney Stinson kind of roles that are a little edgier, but I also like to maintain a presence in the demographic within sort of a more educational slant.”

He adds, “I grew up going to EPCOT Center and things, so I enjoy the ‘narration’ voice.”

Neil Patrick Harris suits up

By Rach | Published Sun Jan-24-10 -

In a new Los Angeles Times article, Neil discusses HIMYM, suits and his own personal style.

“I’m a jeans and T-shirt kind of guy,” he said in a recent interview. “I was intimidated by high-end fashion growing up, and I never really bought into all the expensive things they were hawking in the fashion magazines.

“I didn’t know what to make of it. . . . I’d go into Fred Segal and panic at all the $6,000 shirts. I’d just as soon go to H&M and buy a similar shirt for $70.”

Even so, as a result of playing the show’s well-clad cad, Harris has had the luxury of engaging in some sartorial soul-searching. “Because the wardrobe department adds four or five new suits to Barney’s wardrobe each season, I’ve had the chance to try on just about every brand of suit on the market,” he said.

“That’s how I found that certain brands just fit my body type well. Dolce & Gabbana uses thinner fabrics and that makes them more comfortable for me — that’s another thing I’ve learned from” the show.

Harris, who doesn’t rely on a personal stylist to dress him for talk show appearances and red carpets, has even borrowed from the show’s wardrobe on occasion. “That’s one of the great things about being a guy,” he said. “You can just throw on a suit.”

And when pressed, he’ll admit he can see the wisdom of spending good money on denim (he favors Levi’s and Hudson) and underwear — “the stuff you wear all the time,” he said. He shops for clothes at Barneys CO-OP (“the one at the Grove is pretty good, but I’m usually in New York”). He’s partial to shades of blue and gray, shuns bold patterns and confesses a peculiar addiction to V-neck T-shirts.

“Slate gray is my favorite color,” he said. “I probably have 15 gray short-sleeve V-neck T-shirts in my house. Every time I go to buy clothes, I seem to end up with two more. I’ve got dark gray, darker gray, light gray, lighter gray, [and] darker blue-gray.”

You can read the rest of the interview at the LA Times website, and we’ve added the photoshoot pictures to the gallery, along with some pictures of Neil on the phones at the Hope for Haiti Now telethon on Friday night. The two-hour telethon raised $57m. You can continue to donate by phone, text, or via the Hope for Haiti website for the next six months.

Neil also attended the new Pee Wee Herman show at LA’s Club Nokia last week, and talked to TheStar.com about the show, and the chances of Dr Horrible 2.

The night I attended, I happened to spot How I Met Your Mother‘s Neil Patrick Harris in the audience, and was able to ask him what he thought of the show during an HIMYM set visit the next day.

He essentially agreed with me, having been both mildly entertained and somewhat disappointed with how much of it was recycled. It needs, we concur, more new gags and characters, along the lines of the featured floating puppet “Sham-Wow,” later accidentally deep-fried and resurrected as a ghost.

Harris, a song-and-dance stage star himself, hinted at an upcoming guest appearance on Glee, likely to be directed by Joss Whedon, for whom he also starred in the musical web hit Dr. Horrible’s Sing-a-long Blog.

Harris is as much in the dark as anyone about the likelihood of a Horrible sequel. “I keep sort of asking (Whedon) if it’s gonna happen, if there’s gonna be any kind of Dr. Horrible-ness,” he says. “They’re anxious to do it, but scheduling becomes the tricky issue.”
