Pre-Sketchfest interviews

By Rach | Published Sun Jan-23-11 -

As Neil is taking part in Sketchfest tonight and tomorrow, a couple of San Francisco-based publications have featured interviews with Neil in the last week. He talked to San Francisco Examiner:

The Emmy-winning actor is making three different festival appearances this weekend.

β€œI’m very excited about Dick Cavett-ing myself,” Harris says of one gig, β€œfor a conversation with Brian Henson to talk all things Muppet β€” past, present, future. I’m a β€” you’ll pardon the pun β€” gonzo fan.”

And 7x7SF:
What’s your vote for best picture of the year?
I haven’t seen True Grit yet, but I’m saying Black Swan. I really responded to it. Darren Aronofsky and Natalie Portman really did something special there.

CBS show The Talk is nominated for a GLAAD award in the Outstanding Talk Show Episode category, for the episode in which Neil did his first interview since the birth of the twins. GLAAD announce the winners at three separate ceremonies in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco, and the awards are split between the three events. They will take place between March and May.

People magazine scans

By Rach | Published Thu Jan-13-11 -

We’ve finally added scans from Neil & David’s People interview into the gallery. Thank you to Helena from GoslingFan.com for providing us with such big ones to add!

It also looks as if unfortunately, Neil’s appearance on Ellen tomorrow has fallen victim to his busy schedule, as he’s been replaced in the lineup with Vince Vaughn.

TV Guide has a couple of quotes from Neil in their roundup from a couple of panels on Wednesday at winter TCA Press Tour.

As well as the two shows he was already scheduled to be part of at SF Sketchfest – Brian Henson in Conversation with Neil Patrick Harris, and The Paul F Tompkins Show on Sunday January 23rd – he has also been added to the lineup for the 9.30pm performance of the Thrilling Adventure Hour on Saturday January 22nd. He will join Alison Brie, Colin Hanks, Samm Levine, and Busy Philipps, amongst others, in at the Marine’s Memorial Theatre. Tickets are still available and cost $40/$50.

Finally, if you haven’t already seen it, take a look at this video posted on the official HIMYM YouTube which features the cast talking about “what HIMYM means to them“.

Neil lined up for ‘Company’ and SF Sketchfest

By Rach | Published Mon Dec-13-10 -

Eonline caught up with Neil at the Spike VGAs on Saturday, and they talked about their first Christmas with the twins, and his hosting advice for Anne Hathaway and James Franco.

Neil will be returning to the New York stage in April, for a three night run of Stephen Sondheim’s Company. The performances will be presented by the New York Philharmonic and directed by Lonnie Price. There will be four shows across three days, running from April 7-9 at Avery Fisher Hall. He talked a little to the New York Times about the show, which you can read here.

Tickets go on sale to the general public on Friday, December 17th, and ticket prices start at $65. You can book at nyphil.org, by calling (212) 875-5656, or in person from the Avery Fisher Hall or the Alice Tully Hall Box Offices.

Neil will also be participating in San Francisco Sketchfest this year. After being forced to pull out last year due to work, he returns to the lineup to take part in “Brian Henson in Conversation with Neil Patrick Harris”, on January 23rd at 1pm at Cobb’s Comedy Club, and The Paul F Tompkins Show, January 23rd at 7pm.

Brian Henson is the Chairman of the Jim Henson Company and recently created and launched the company’s live stage show “Stuffed and Unstrung”. Tickets cost $45 and are available here.

The Paul F Tompkins Show will take place at Yoshi’s SF. Tickets cost $30 and are available online here.

A yearly favorite at SF Sketchfest, The Paul F. Tompkins Show is a variety show for the 21st Century. Neither a parody of, nor a slavish re-creation of, “olde-tyme sho-biz,” The Paul F. Tompkins Show combines comedy and music in a contemporary fashion. So… sorry, plate-spinning fans!

Paul welcomes friends Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother), Gillian Jacobs (Community), musical guest Tom Brosseau, and, as always, Eben Schletter and his band.

Neil pulls out of Sketchfest appearance

By Rach | Published Fri Jan-22-10 -

The SF Sketchfest website has been updated with the following:

Due to a previously unforseen engagement out of the country that cannot be rescheduled, Neil Patrick Harris has regretfully canceled his appearance at SF Sketchfest, and has been replaced by Jason Segel.

Neil followed this up with a statement of his own last night:

“I’m so terribly disappointed to be missing SK Sketchfest this year, and I did everything in my power to avoid having to withdraw. I’m a huge fan of the festival, and I love the Bay Area, so needless to say, I can’t wait to come back… assuming San Francisco will still have me! Meanwhile, I managed to wrangle Super A-List Movie Star and Sometimes Nudist Jason Segel to join the show in my stead. He’s great. And single. So if you play your card right, you may just get invited to the “after party”, if you know what I mean…”

Apparently refunds are available, so if you purchased a ticket and no longer wish to attend, get in touch with Sketchfest or the Cobb Comedy Club directly and they should be able to help you out.

New Neil Patrick Harris interview

By Rach | Published Thu Jan-14-10 -

Neil has done another pre-Sketchfest interview, this time with San Jose Mercury News. It was most likely conducted a couple of weeks ago as he mentions being in the running for Gay Man of the Decade, rather than winning it. You can check the whole interview out here!

How did you learn about San Francisco Sketchfest and how did you become involved?
Janet Varney is a very close friend of mine. She’s one of the three founders (with Cole Stratton and David Owen) and I’m a wild fan of hers. So I do whatever she tells me to do. I think it’s an amazing feat that these three people take on so much.

How do you know Janet?
Dave (Burtka), my better half, was in “On the Lot,” which was a competition reality show to find the next great director β€” a thing that Steven Spielberg produced. Janet and David were both actors on the show. They got to hang out and get to know each other, and we obviously all started hanging out. She and (boyfriend) Chris Hardwick β€” they’re hilarious together. I just like watching them perform around a dinner table.

Are there any performers at Sketchfest you’re especially excited about?
A John Hodgman. I just worked on a movie with him. And I got him to be the voice-over announcer on the Emmys.

When they announce the winner, you have a voice-over person say, “This is Michael’s third nomination.” I thought it would be fun to have John Hodgman do made-up ones like, “This is Khan’s second win; he was raised by packs of wolves.” I kind of wanted it to be one of those TiVo moments, with John in a booth making stuff up.

Joss Whedon, who directed you in “Dr. Horrible,” called you “the Sinatra of TV.” Time magazine called you the “icon of cool masculinity.” You really seem to be having fun with the kind of buzz you’ve generated from how your career has most recently unfolded.
I don’t take any of it to heart. Apparently, I’m in the running for gay man of the decade. Everyone’s looking for something to say about people and I’m flattered that what they say about me is generally positive. It’s been a lovely year. You try to represent yourself as best you can and execute as well as you can.

Neil Patrick Harris up for Sketchfest challenge

By Rach | Published Tue Jan-12-10 -

A couple of new interviews this morning! Firstly there’s one at the NY Post’s PopWrap, where they spoke to Neil as the culmination of a week of speaking to the HIMYM cast. He talks about HIMYM’s 100th episode and his directing stint, Glee, and when we’re likely to see Doctor Horrible 2, amongst other things!

PW: With tonight’s 100th episode, I have to ask — what’s your favorite?
NPH: It might sound glib, but I think standing on top of a taxi cab in front of 60 people wearing well-tailored suits, spinning around like a rockstar definitely takes the cake. It’s a close race filming on “The Price is Right” soundstage with Bob Barker though. That one made me squeal!

PW: You’re a big “Price is Right” fan from what I’ve read.
NPH: Well, yeah, I mean, everybody thinks they’ll be on “The Price is Right” one day. I was no different than anyone else, but I was an actor on a show, so I did think that precluded me from being chosen by the producers who pick the people to run down the aisle.

Neil has also been talking to the San Francisco Chronicle about his participation in the upcoming SF Sketchfest.

Q: Last year, you told that tragicomic story about your childhood dog Lester, who died and was bagged and kept in a freezer through winter. How are you possibly going to top that this year?
A: I think I’m simply reading from a book for “Celebrity Autobiography.” So I’m really hoping that Mario Lopez has some good stanzas.

Q: You’ve picked your book?
A: Not really. I’m still deciding. Didn’t Hasselhoff come out with a book this year? That would be good. That would be awesome. (Voice gets sinister) And then there’s always Palin …

Janet had two options for me, both of which I was dying to do. She also wanted me to be a guest on “Match Game” – and I will always be a guest on “Match Game” – but the Golden Globes are that weekend. Neither one required a lot of homework on my part. In fact, with “Celebrity Autobiography” I think the less you try to make it a comedy bit, the funnier it is.

Q: Are you going to hang around for other shows?
A: We’re going to hang out for the second weekend, so I think we’ll get to see some stuff. I’m actually looking at the Web site right now. (Harris scans the schedule.) Guest monologuist Moon Zappa. That will be funny … Edie McClurg? … ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic … Dick Cavett’s doing a Marx Brothers thing. That’s fantastic! I may have to skip out on Moon Zappa for Dick Cavett.

2009 Recap – The year of NPH!

By Rach | Published Tue Dec-22-09 -

First, the upcoming: Neil will be taking part in Days 17 and 18 of the SF Sketchfest. On January 30th at 8pm, and January 31st at 7pm, Neil will be appearing in “Celebrity Autobiography” alongside Rachel Dratch, Lesley Ann Warren, Fred Willard and more. Tickets are $35 for the event, taking place at Cobb’s Comedy Club in San Francisco, California, and you can purchase them here.

FOX today released their American Idol schedule for season 9. The show kicks off on Tuesday January 12th, in Boston. Neil sat in on the auditions in Dallas, which are set to air Tuesday, Jan. 26 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT).

The year is almost over and Neil is appearing on “best of” lists all over the place, including People magazine’s most intriguing people of the year, and places him at #2 on Buddy TV’s Breakout Star of 2009 list.

His Emmy’s hosting gig makes AOL TV’s Top Moments of 2009, Canada.com list him on their 2009 “Naughty and Nice” list, there’s an Honourble Mention on AfterElton’s 2009 Visibility Awards in the Theatrical Event category, for his Tony’s hosting gig. And for HIMYM, he makes TV Guide’s 25 Best Performances of the Year.

Reacting to his Golden Globe nod, Neil joked that he’d like a gift from CBS. “Maybe this year CBS or Fox will give me a new car. Didn’t they do that with all the ‘Will & Grace‘ people once? Didn’t they give them all Miatas for getting nominations or something? One can dream!”

Finally, Advocate.com has a little more from Neil’s acceptance speech at the Trevor Project event back on December 5th.

Words of Wisdom

“The Naked Man is going to revolutionize the one-night stand. It's like the forward pass in football, the slam dunk in basketball, the technique in hair cutting where you put the hair between two fingers and you cut from the top - It's a total game changer!”
