tick, tick… BOOM! is a musical written by American composer Jonathan Larson.

It tells the story of an aspiring composer named Jonathan (also referred to as Jon or Johnny) who lives in New York City in 1990. Jon is worried he has made the wrong career choice to be part of the performing arts. The story is autobiographical, as stated by Larson’s father in the liner notes of the cast recording – Larson had been trying to establish himself in theatre since the early 1980s.

“Neil Patrick Harris stars, fulfilling a long-held ambition — he’d been asked to do the part in its original New York production but was busy filming. So when Scott Schwartz, director for both that Off-Broadway original and this London staging, offered it to him again, he jumped on board.
Harris is best known as the star of the TV series “Doogie Howser MD.” However, he has built a substantial career as a Broadway leading man, with credits including Cabaret, Assassins and Proof. He was also featured in Larson’s other musical, Rent.”
Playbill

“As John, Neil Patrick Harris (who once-upon-a-time graced our screens as Doogie Howser) gives a genuinely likeable performance. The role requires him to be on stage for almost the full 90 minutes – fluidly moving from song to song, dancing, and coolly soliloquising to the audience – but though the poor lad’s T-shirt is practically saturated with sweat by the end of the night, he makes it all seem incredibly effortless and the generous nature of his performance means his character never once loses that agreeable everyman quality.”

Words of Wisdom

“Watch your step when you get up kids, 'cause I'm about to drop some knowledge. Relationships are like a freeway. Freeways have exits, so do relationships. The first exit, my personal favorite, is six hours in. You meet, you talk, you have sex, you exit when she's in the shower. The next exits are four days, three weeks, seven months - That's when you guys are gonna break up, mark your calendars. Then a year and a half, eighteen years, and the last exit: death, which, if you've been with the same woman for your entire life, it's like "Are we there yet?"”
