Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay

Directed by: Jon Hurwitz & Hayden Schlossberg
Written by: Jon Hurwitz & Hayden Schlossberg

Cast:
John Cho – Harold Lee
Kal Penn – Kumar Patel
Neil Patrick Harris – Neil Patrick Harris
David Krumholtz – Goldstein
Eddie Kaye Thomas – Rosenberg
Danneel Harris – Vanessa Fanning
Eric Winter – Colton Graham

Plot:
Following the events of Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle, Harold Lee and Kumar Patel fly to Amsterdam so Harold can pursue a budding romance with his neighbor, Maria. After a prolonged struggle with security, the pair run into Vanessa, Kumar’s ex-girlfriend, who happened to be the one who introduced Kumar to marijuana and helped him come out of his shell as an undergraduate. They are soon joined by Vanessa’s fiancee, Colton, who helped Harold get his current job before embarking on a career with the government. The two board the plane, and mid-flight, Kumar follows Harold to the restroom with his new invention: a smokeless bong. As Harold exits, an old woman sees Kumar lighting the bong, then exclaiming “terrorist!” air marshals immediately detain both, and the plane returns to Washington, where Ron Fox, an undersecretary of Homeland Security, interrogates the pair before sending them to the Guantanamo Bay detention camp. They soon manage to escape, hitching a ride to Miami.

After encountering a number of quirks and strange situations, they eventually board a car driven by Neil Patrick Harris. High on mushrooms and drinking Jack Daniel’s, Harris transports the pair to the Texas border, where he uses his fame to get through a road block set up by the DHS. However, rather than proceed directly to the wedding, Harris insists that the trio stop at his favorite whore house. Harold confesses to the other prostitutes that Kumar is selfish and thinks only of himself and not of the consequences that affect others, while Kumar is confessing to the pair of prostitutes in the other room that he is still in love with Vanessa. However, Harold and Kumar are forced to flee after Harris is chased out, and then gunned down for branding his initials on the buttocks of a prostitute.

“It’s hard to determine whether this sequel works as a standalone movie, since some of the funniest bits are the nods to the first movie that only true fans will appreciate. There’s lots of callbacks, and not just NPH (Neil Patrick Harris) who has a far bigger role as himself, a celebrity who gets more out of control the more drugs he takes. When he picks up the guys and treats them at a whorehouse, things go downhill from there.”

“I’ve never seen an audience respond to a movie the way this Austin premiere crowd went crazy for Neil Patrick Harris. When his name appeared in the opening titles — “Neil Patrick Harris as ‘Neil Patrick Harris’” — they cheered. When he made his first appearance, driving a car in the Texas backwoods, they clapped and hollered. And when he died, in a way I don’t dare reveal, they went apoplectic. Let’s hear it for the unlikeliest of Generation-Y heroes.

For those who may be confused, Harris played himself in Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle, in a small role just this side of a cameo. His performance was hilariously self-deprecating, making “Neil Patrick Harris” into a randy bastard, and leading to one of the decade’s greatest quotations: “What’s the deal with Neil Patrick Harris? Why is he so horny?” Harris surprised everyone by turning out to be the rare “washed-up” actor to exhibit some wisdom about his career and pop culture status. And he has been rewarded with the adoration of a new army of fans, most of whom know only enough about Doogie Howser, M.D. to realize that it merits derision.

He’s is back with a vengeance in Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay, and the character’s popularity allows writers Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg (who also directed the sequel) to turn the already meta joke into a bizarre self-referential mobius strip.”

On the way they meet people who challenge some stereotypes and confirm others, and they also, in a sublime pop-cultural in-joke carried over from the trip to White Castle, hook up with the great Neil Patrick Harris.

Words of Wisdom

“Watch your step when you get up kids, 'cause I'm about to drop some knowledge. Relationships are like a freeway. Freeways have exits, so do relationships. The first exit, my personal favorite, is six hours in. You meet, you talk, you have sex, you exit when she's in the shower. The next exits are four days, three weeks, seven months - That's when you guys are gonna break up, mark your calendars. Then a year and a half, eighteen years, and the last exit: death, which, if you've been with the same woman for your entire life, it's like "Are we there yet?"”
