From the festival’s guide:
New York City is the home of many privileged circles, perhaps none more cutthroat than the culture of early childhood education, as Jeff (Neil Patrick Harris) and Samantha (Bonnie Somerville) learn after relocating from Delaware to the Big Apple following a sudden financial boost courtesy of Jeff’s deceased aunt’s will.
Previously known for scripting the edgy British soccer romp Green Street Hooligans, The Best and the Brightest’s co-writer/director Josh Shelov directs Harris. Harris is one of today’s most beloved comedic performers of the small screen, in a hilarious farce about yuppie inclinations to be among the elite… via selecting a prestigious kindergarten for their unknowing five year olds. Shot partially in Philadelphia, this film does a tremendous job capturing the enchantment of East Coast city life. The brown stones of their upper-echelon neighborhood woo not only Jeff and Samantha —but the audience as well — without a fight. Somerville is dead-on as an earnest young mother giving her dreams one last chance, while Harris proves the perfect choice for Jeff. Self-conscious about their new lifestyle tied up in the insecurity over their daughter’s schooling, we laugh uneasily at Jeff and Samantha effortless unraveling. Perhaps some dreams are best left un-pursued. Delightful and honest, Shelov adroitly nourishes the script’s charm to deliver enormous laughs.
The Best and The Brightest is competing in the Filmadelphia Feature Competition at the festival. Information about cast & crew attendance at the premiere will be coming, and you can follow the movie and the director Josh Shelov on Twitter at @BestNBrightest and @ShelovJ to be among the first to hear that info.
