A Snow White Christmas

By Rach | Published Tue Aug-30-11 -

As previously mentioned, Neil will be taking on the role of the Magic Mirror in Lythgoe Family Productions/Magic Pictures International’s A Snow White Christmas. The production, also starring Star Trek‘s Marina Sirtis and Lindsay Pearce from The Glee Project will run from November 30 – December 18 at the El Portal Theatre in North Hollywood, California, and you can buy tickets here.

Neil Patrick Harris has signed on to star in the onscreen special guest role of “The Magic Mirror” in “Snow White,” following in the tradition of several major stars that have played the role on the London stage; and Marina Sirtis, of Star Trek: The Next Generation fame, will star opposite as The Wicked Queen. Plus Lindsay Pearce from “The Glee Project” will star in the title role. The production will be helmed by Bonnie Lythgoe from So You Think You Can Dance AU and choreographed by Dancing With the Stars’ Mark Ballas with Michael Orland serving as Musical Director (American Idol). An updated version of the classic tale, “Snow White” features family-friendly magic, a comedic twist and modern music, including Lady Gaga’s Born This Way, The Village People’s YMCA, and Michael Jackson’s Thriller. Tickets will be on sale August 9 for “A Snow White Christmas,” running November 30-December 18 at the El Portal Theatre.

“Last year’s production of Cinderella exceeded our expectations, and we’re thrilled to continue to bring the family fun of the traditional British Panto to LA audiences with our new production of Snow White,” says Jason Haigh-Ellery, President of Magic Theatre. “Both shows promise to be fun family productions – the perfect holiday present.”

Magic Pictures will hold open auditions for the roles of the “7 Dwarfs” on September 30 and October 1 at Westfield Culver City, where last year a panel of celebrity judges including Mark Ballas, Neil Patrick Harris, Kara Dioguardi, and Mary Murphy, picked the star of “Cinderella” from over 700 performers. A celebrity panel will again be on hand to help choose the standout child actors to star in the seven roles. Leading up to the auditions, Snow White memorabilia will be displayed at the Center, and kids will have the chance to meet Snow White.

First look at Neil in ‘Company’

By Rach | Published Mon May-16-11 -

If you weren’t lucky enough to be at Avery Fisher Hall to see Company last month, you can now see a first look clip of the cinematic release. The New York Philharmonic YouTube has posted a video of the cast performing Side By Side. Tickets are now on sale for your chance to catch this in movie theaters, starting June 15th (Neil’s birthday).

The New York Philharmonic, EMK Productions and Screenvision are proud to present Stephen Sondheim’s “Company” in movie theatres across the nation. The production was shot in early April as part of the Philharmonic’s spring gala. Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother) lead an all-star cast which included Patti LuPone, Stephen Colbert (The Colbert Report), Jon Cryer (Two and a Half Men), Christina Hendricks (Mad Men), Craig Bierko and Martha Plimpton. Company’s plot revolves around Bobby (a single man unable to commit fully to a steady relationship, let alone marriage), the five married couples who are his best friends, and his three girlfriends. It’s a concept musical composed of short vignettes linked by a celebration for Bobby’s 35th birthday.

For details on where you can catch the show, and to purchase tickets, visit Screenvision in the USA or Cineplex if you’re in Canada.

And if you hadn’t already heard, further to the rumour last week that Neil would be hosting this year’s Tony Awards, it’s true, and Neil confirmed it in a tweet last week. The ceremony takes place at the Beacon Theater in New York on June 12, and will be broadcast live on CBS (8/7c, 8pm time delay on the West Coast).

New York Times article on ‘Company’

By Rach | Published Wed Apr-6-11 -

‘Company’ opens tomorrow for the first of its three day run, and The New York Times has an article on the rehearsal process, which you can read here.

Mr. Price also tapped Mr. Harris and Ms. LuPone, both “Sweeney Todd” alumni, as his earliest cast members (though he diplomatically declined to say who signed on first).

Starting with two leads who lived on different coasts — each with complicated schedules right up to opening night — Mr. Price began making provisions for cast members to learn the show individually.

Turning to Amy Rogers, a former assistant of his who directs Pace’s musical theater-program, he recruited students there to learn the show over the winter; they were then recorded singing the songs and performing the blocking and choreography in audio and video files given to the production’s official cast.

Mr. Harris said he had been practicing while “driving, at the gym, between takes”; listening to MP3 files of piano orchestrations or vocal arrangements in which his character’s tracks have been removed; and checking in via Skype for lessons with his voice instructor. “It’s very Epcot Center,” he said.

BWW Review: Rent

By Hilary | Published Sun Aug-8-10 -

BroadwayWorld.com has an extensive look at Neil’s production of Rent, which has its third and final performance at the Hollywood Bowl this evening.

Harris’ challenge—besides honoring a beloved show as well as living up to his stunt casting choices—was to take a relatively-intimate rock musical about financially-strapped bohemians living in the less-than-luxurious Lower East Side enclave of New York City and expand it on the massive stage entrenched in the Hollywood Hills.

The results—a mixed bag of technical gaffes, surprisingly excellent performances, and a few disappointments—prove to be admirably and genuinely entertaining overall. Your enjoyment of this version of RENT will depend primarily on the absence of pre-show expectations and one’s willingness to accept many of the changes Harris made in order to mount his specific vision at this venue.

Final “Rent” casting confirmed

By Rach | Published Mon Jun-7-10 -

If you haven’t seen already over the last few days, it was announced that the final main role in the the NPH-directed production of Rent has gone to former Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger. She will play Maureen, alongside already cast Aaron Tveit, Skylar Astin, Vanessa Hudgens, Wayne Brady and more. ContactMusic has a few words from Neil on Nicole’s casting. The ensemble has also been announced, and comprises of Yassmin Alers, Eric B. Anthony, King Aswad, Susan Beaubian, David Burtka, Kathy Deitch, Sam Given, Rachael Harris, Tricia Kelly, Ethan Le Phong, Kristolyn Lloyd, Zarah Mahler, Laura Mixon, Jason Paige, MiRi Park, and Brandon Wardell.

“Nicole had a wonderful audition – she was well prepared, sang beautifully, and had us all laughing. If only she was somewhat attractive and didn’t have two left feet… I’m very excited to have finally finished the casting process, and look forward to rolling up my sleeves and start rehearsing.”

Neil guest co-hosted this morning’s Live with Regis & Kelly alongside Kelly Ripa, sitting in for Regis Philbin. The “host chat” segment is online now – Neil and Kelly discussed David’s surprise birthday party, his decision to cast Vanessa Hudgens in Rent and the Smurfs, amongst other things, and you can watch the video below.

Last week, Neil and David went to see Stuffed and Unstrung, and you can see a gallery of their visit with the cast (both human and puppet) here on Playbill.com.

More casting news for NPH’s “Rent”

By Rach | Published Sat May-1-10 -

Following on from the recent casting of Vanessa Hudgens as Mimi, details of the rest of the “Rent” cast have been announced.

Next To Normal star Aaron Tveit will be taking on the role of Roger, and Spring Awakenings Skylar Astin will play Mark. Cold Case star Tracie Thomas will be reprising the role of Joanne, which she previously played in the movie version of Rent as well as at the end of it’s Broadway run. Wayne Brady, who has worked alongside Neil as Barney’s brother James on How I Met Your Mother, will be playing Collins.

Collins Pennie (Benny), Telly Leung (Angel) and Gwen Stewart round out the currently announced cast.

“So far, I’m thrilled with the cast. With this gang, I’m hoping to provide an eclectic mix of experienced RENT performers, amazing new talent, and recognizable faces in unexpected roles. Of paramount importance to me, though, is honoring the piece as a whole – the music, the vibe, the creator – so that those who have never experienced RENT will be able to appreciate it alongside die hard fans. We’ll only have one week of rehearsal, which I like to call ‘madness’, but as of now my hopes are very high.” – Neil Patrick Harris

Individual tickets are available from Tuesday, May 2nd at HollywoodBowl.com, in person at the Hollywood Bowl box office, or by calling 323-850-2000. Rent will run from August 6-8 at the Hollywood Bowl, directed by Neil Patrick Harris, with musical direction by Tim Weil and choreography by Jamal Sims.

In other news, magician Lance Burton was a guest on this week’s Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, and Craig left it to Neil to introduce him, as only Neil can. You can watch the video here!

Words of Wisdom

“Nice! Girls with "ly" at the end of their names are dirty. Carly, Shirly, Lily. Don't even get me started on girls whose name should end in "ly", but instead end in I. Those girls are like roller-coasters. You've got to wait in a long line, but once you get up there, you just hold on for dear life and hope you don't lose your keys.”
- Barney Stinson
